Australian Art by Yvonne Ashby |

My
professional journey began with studies in both interior and graphic design.
For a number of years I worked as a children’s book illustrator. But more and
more I was driven by a desire to paint. My first solo exhibition at Yarrabee House, Adelaide Botanic Garden in 1996 launched my
career. The work was influenced by my design background and love of botanical
forms. In time designing became less of a preoccupation and the desire to
paint from a new perspective consumed me. A turning point in my career was
being given the opportunity as Artist in Residence at The Adelaide College of
Divinity. It was here that I embarked on a journey that would lead me to
nurture and develop spirituality and art. Coupled with studies in Theology my
style developed. I have three areas in which I predominately work. Coastal
scenes, which are reminiscent of typical
Australian family holidays spent at the beach. Contemporary
floral paintings, which reflect a love of nature’s beauty and spiritual and theological artwork. In 1996 I was the recipient of a
National Award where my painting was selected above 24 state and territory
winners of the Order of Australia Association's “Australia My Vision Quest”.
On reflection
I would muse that the experience of dedicating my life as a professional artist
has been a constantly evolving journey. One where the goalposts recede further
into the background as the enormity of the quest is revealed.
